MASON CITY — The City Council in Mason City last night approved submitting a letter of interest to host an overnight stop for the Des Moines Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa in 2020. Mason City previously hosted a RAGBRAI overnight stop in 2014. If the city is chosen, they will partner with Main Street Mason City to serve as the main planning organization for the event.

Main Street Mason City executive director Emily Ginneberge says her organization will be ready to help with such a commitment. “If Mason City is selected, the riders will arrive on July 21st or July 22nd of 2020. This event will bring 10-to-15,000 people to the community, generating a tremendous amount of economic impact from visitor spending estimated at more than $3 million for an overnight stay.”

Ginneberge says they want to make a RAGBRAI overnight stop a memorable event for bicyclists and guests to the community.  “Main Street Mason City stands ready and willing to lead efforts to organize and facilitate an epic RAGBRAI overnight event.”

Host communities for the 2020 edition of RAGBRAI will be announced on January 25th.
