Mariah Carey says that her mother and sister died on the same day last week: ‘My heart is broken.’
Mariah Carey has recently revealed that her family has experienced two significant losses.
In a heartbreaking turn of events, the Grammy singer expressed deep sorrow over the loss of her mother and sister. “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, my sister also lost her life on the same day,” she shared in a statement with USA TODAY on Monday. Despite the immense grief, she feels fortunate to have had the opportunity to spend the last week with her mother before her passing.
“I am grateful for the love, support, and respect that everyone has shown me during this incredibly difficult period,” she expressed.
No information was provided about the cause of death. People magazine was the first to report this news.
In her 2020 memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey,” Carey candidly discusses her complex relationships with family members.
Carey’s relationship with her father, Alfred Roy Carey, was strained as they were estranged. Unfortunately, Alfred Roy Carey passed away at the age of 72 in 2002 due to cancer. Carey was raised by her mother Patricia Carey, along with her siblings Morgan and Alison.
According to Mariah Carey’s memoir, Morgan exhibited destructive behavior throughout both their childhood and adulthood. Carey recounts instances where holes were punched in walls and objects were thrown when Morgan was present.
Carey expressed that her mother was emotionally distant and unable to provide the care she needed. She also revealed a disturbing incident where her sister, Alison, threw boiling tea on her. Despite these challenges, Carey dedicated a portion of her book to her mother, Pat, acknowledging that she believes her mother did the best she could. She expressed her enduring love for her mother and her commitment to loving her to the best of her ability, always.
Carey and Bryan Tanaka called it quits after almost a decade together. However, Carey didn’t let that stop her from pursuing her passion. In April, she kicked off her third Las Vegas residency titled “Mariah Carey: The Celebration of Mimi Live in Las Vegas.” This highly anticipated series of performances is slated to run until February 2025.
Mariah Carey will be going on tour this winter to celebrate the 30th anniversary of her beloved holiday album “Merry Christmas.” The tour, called Mariah Carey’s Christmas Time, promises to be a festive and memorable experience for fans.
